Traveling to and from Alicante Airport

By Abel Satiku

Alicante airport is located about nine kilometers southwest of the city of Alicante, Spain. It is located in Elche. This is the main airport used by passengers to Alicante and Muric regions. Much of the movement in Costa Blanca each year is via the airport.

The airport is large, clean with marble hallways. There are restaurants, bars and shops to visit while you wait for your flight. There is also a large duty free shop located in the terminal for your convenience.

Traffic in Alicante airport

The airport opened in 1967 and has grown dramatically since then. A large percentage of travelers come through this airport during the visit of the Costa Blanca. Almost nine million people in Alicante fly each year. About 80% of traffic is international travel.

Growth has been enormous in recent years. The number of passengers using the airport grows each year. To follow the increased demand, a new terminal is under construction. The new terminal is scheduled to open in the year 2009.

A large number of flights come into this airport from around the globe. Many are from the United Kingdom, since this area is a popular attraction for British travelers. The next largest number of flights comes from Germany and the Netherlands.

Traveling from Alicante airport

Once you arrive at the airport, there are several ways you can travel to your final destination. There is no train to the airport. The transport method you choose depends on where you are and how you intend to travel within the region during your stay.

You can take the bus from the airport to several destinations around Alicante. The city bus in Alicante is relatively inexpensive. The journey takes about forty minutes and the bus operates from 8 am to 11 pm Buses run approximately every forty-five minutes. It is air-conditioned, so you enjoy if you travel during the summer. Although many drivers speak only Spanish, they are very friendly and helpful.

There is a bus and Benidorm. This bus is a little more expensive, as the journey is longer. It takes about an hour and fifteen minutes to get to Benidorm from the airport. This road is new and does not work as often as the old city of Alicante. The bus operates from 7 am to 9 pm and just about every hour. Routes are available in Calpe, Denia Torrevieja and so.

If you prefer not to wait for buses, taxis are available outside the airport. Drivers are very useful. Some are bilingual and others speak only Spanish. Taxis are available at the station in Alicante or any surrounding cities. The price you pay depends on the distance to your final destination.
