Back Pain And Adjustable Beds
By James Keyes
People who suffer from back pain need to be careful when they choose the kind of bed they sleep on. Although there is practically no research with regard to the kinds of beds that are best for the back, there are some advantaged to sleeping on this type of bed. Here are some facts about adjustable beds and back pain.
An adjustable bed allows a person to adjust their sleeping position to numerous positions. For the people who suffer from some types of back problems, sleeping on a bed that adjusts in a somewhat inclined position is usually more comfortable because there is some support under the knees that allows them to bend at a slight angle and the upper body is positioned somewhat higher than the lower body. This combination of knee support and upper body incline can help take some of the stress off of the lower back and can relieve pressure on the whole body by supporting the curves of the spine.
Here are some of the causes of back pain:
Degenerative Spondylolisthesis: For the people who suffer from degenerative spondylolisthesis, they can sleep easier during the night and reduce some of the discomfort and pain in the lower back by sleeping in a reclining position and having support under the knees.
Osteoarthritis: The people who suffer from facet joint arthritis or osteoarthritis of the spine frequently wake up in the morning feeling somewhat sore and stiff. They can reduce this irritation and provide better support by sleeping on an adjustable bed.
Spinal Stenosis: The people who suffer from spinal stenosis will usually feel more comfortable when bending forward rather than standing up straight. This problem can be relieved by sleeping on one which allows them to sleep in a reclining position.
Also, people who have recently had back surgery usually feel that an adjustable bed is more comfortable than a flat bed. However, this is largely a matter of personal preference. If a person feels better sitting with their knees slightly elevated or supported in a reclining chair, they should consider the option of one. This is especially true if they are having a difficult time getting a good night's sleep on a traditional flat bed.
In order to determine if a person would benefit from an adjustable bed they can place pillows underneath their knees and propping up their upper body while providing support for the lower back.
