The Basics of Competitive Swimming
By Ram Collins
A swimmer, who swims a given distance in the least amount of time, wins a Competitive Swimming event. Competitive swimming, which was introduced in 19th century, has 34 competitive swimming events held today, which are 17 each in number, for male and females.
The Summer Olympic Games, has 13 men and women events each. A 50 meter pool is used for undertaking these Olympic events, with the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA), also known as the International Swimming Federation, being the governing international organization.
Backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and the freestyle are the 4 kinds of strokes in competitive swimming. In freestyle, a swimmer can use any stroke. Individual Medley or the IM is an event, where a combination of these strokes or individual strokes is used. Butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and finally, freestyle are to be used sequentially.
The two kinds of swim relays are the medley and the freestyle. In the medley relay, the order of strokes should be backstroke first and then breaststroke followed by butterfly and, finally, freestyle. There are four competitors in a swim relay and they will swim a given distance based on the total length of the swim relay, which can be any of the three - 200 meters, 400 meters, and 800 meters. Swimmers can only swim freestyle on 800-meter distance.
A 25 meter broad and a 50 meter long pool is a full size pool in the United States. Short as well as long races are catered to by this size. Am umpire or a referee in competitive swimming, known as the "official" monitors the events. Disqualification becomes the consequence, if a swimmer is caught by "official" flouting the rules, such as, by using wrong strokes.
United states has many organizations, communities and schools which are sponsoring swimming leagues for teenagers and children. These leagues consist of swimming teams, which are trained in following standard rules and in usage of proper swimming strokes. Competitive swimming events that are held in these leagues however, are lengthwise shorted. In summer time, the leagues schedule their swim meets, which are without any association with any international or national organization.
The swimmers associated with these swim leagues often join a national team consequentially. Hence, most parents motivate their siblings to be a part of such clubs, which is agreed to by most youngsters in the interest of giving a start to their goals of being a part of competitive swimming.
